Prime-TASS

New-generation telecom services will become available to all Russians at an affordable price as a result of the restructuring of Svyazinvest, RF Telecommunications Minister Igor Schegolev announced today at an expanded meeting of the agency’s collegiums.

“This restructuring will be an instrument that will help overcome the digital divide”, the Telecom Minister pointed out.  He went on to say that the annual general shareholders meeting for the companies slated for reorganization at which a decision is to be reached on their merger with Rostelecom (RTKM) will take place in June 2010 and all legal aspects pertaining to the reorganization of the holding should be wrapped up by April 2011. “The reorganization of Svyazinvest will make it possible to overcome the digital divide”, the Telecom Minister believes.

“We’re confident that the market cap and share liquidity of the merged company will benefit, although profit, which is important, should not be regarded as the only result”, Mr. Schegolev emphasized.

He pointed out that the universal telecom services, provided by leading telecom company Svyazinvest, will continue to expand into remote corners throughout Russia.  According to Schegolev, more than 147,000 public phones were installed in the country, and over 20,000 public Internet points were up and running as of year-end 2009.  Thanks to the organized issue and delivery of more than 2 mln cards, the number of telecom services provided via public phones more than doubled and reached 33 mln min in 2009.

Mr. Schegolev also noted that Svyazinvest has set the goal of working out a system that can be used to place collect calls, which will release callers from the need to use plastic cards and raise the demand for service”.
