Rostelecom looking to build 4G broadband wireless networkPrime-TASS
Rostelecom believes it is advisable to roll out a broadband wireless network using LTE (4G) technology. This news was announced to journalists today by the general director of Rostelecom, Anton Kolpakov.
As Mr. Kolpakov noted, broadband wireless networks are to be rolled out in 38 regions of Russia on the basis of a uniform technological solution. At present, the company is in talks with designers in order to rapidly work out the design for these networks.
As he noted, selecting the supplier of equipment for the broadband wireless networks is an important issue, since under the license terms the company is required to choose a domestic supplier.
Mr. Kolpakov went on to say that as a simplified solution the company is considering WIMAX equipment with which to build these networks, although LTE (4G) is preferable. He pointed out that “there are domestic suppliers of WIMAX equipment now in Russia and, by opting for WIMAX network the terms of these licenses could be adhere to, although it would be far more advisable right from the start to roll out a more progressive network”.
“We expect them (domestic LTE manufacturers – Prime-TASS) to appear before long”, Mr. Kolpakov said.
As reported earlier by Prime-TASS, Rostelecom was awarded licenses to provide wireless mobile broadband services in 38 regions of Russia based on the results of tenders held in February and March 2010.
Based on the license terms, in order to build these networks the operator should use domestically manufactured equipment and commission its networks within a year and a half after the date on which the licenses were issued.
